The decease of the Belgian artist Roger Raveel in 2013, inspired Boss for the creation of a series of works in honor of Raveel and other masters from the history of art. In these series, the same elements are used: a line figure, representing the contours of Roger Raveel and painted in his style, is depicted on a canvas, which is for the remainder painted in the style of the other artist.
In the first work of this set, Raveel is linked to Mark Rothko. The Raveel figure is drawn monumentally in front of a color field painting constructed with red and black.
The combination of the styles ot the two artists creates a new unique work: 1 + 1 = 3 in this case.

In the foreground you can see a young girl with long blonde hair walking inside the canvas. This night scene occurs on a deserted lane with plane trees. A light source shines on the hair of th girl and makes her sweater glare in a bright orange. A bit further, some cars are hardly visible. The facades of the houses are also only slightly suggested.
The pruissian blue sky spreads a cool light on the rest of the environment and transforms the dark trees into amorphous pilars. This creates a similar mysterious atmosphere that you can find in the works of Paul Delvaux. But differently from what you can find in the works of Delvaux, the surreality doesn’t get the empahsis (no strange combinations of antique and contemporary elements, nor (half)naked female figures). The focus is on the solitude and isolation, on the threatening danger and the vulnerability of the girl, alone on a nightly lane. It is just like she is heading into a dark forest and danger is lying behind every tree.

This small piece of art gives an impressionistic impression. In contrast to the other works in the series of haze paintings, no persons are present. At the horizon, the contours of a typical Flemish village can be noticed. The details of the landscape are lost in the veils of the haze floating above the meadows.

Five poison green silhouettes of women are vogueing in suggestive poses. Two dark female shades on the foreground are framing the scene. This way, the whole scenery is giving a peepshow-impression and the spectator is pushed in the role of Peeping Tom. The background is mainly composed out of intense reddish colors and variants of grey and was applied with techniques like splashing, dripping and rubbing. In between the female figures texts are scribbled, which give the pane the look of a graffiti wall. The garish colors seem to stengthen the sloganesque messages.

A dark, shady figure is walking away from the viewer on a lonely street, heading for the misty horizon. The arid landscape is being dominated by ochres, sienna and earth shades. The strong shadows within this widescreen painting create an enduring atmoshpere, reminding of a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. And in this case, the Man in the Long Black Coat would be played – without any doubt- by Clint Eastwood.

While the greyness literally weeps from the walls, the Shiny People bring color to the painting. The Shiny People are icons for the Übermensch. They glare in the mass. This time the shiny people don’t appear in a coïncidal grey crowd. Here, they are surrounded by the greatest murderers of all times.

Shiny People In A Crowd

The shiny people are the good guys, the talented, the intellectuals, the brave ones, the Übermenschen. They glare in the grey crowd.
In shiny people in the crowd, they are litteraly placed in the middle of a crowd of grey anonymous silhouttes. The simplification of the figures into line figures reduces the difference between the shiny people and the crowd onto it’s essence. How the shiny people or the grey people look like is not important. The difference is incapsulated in their shining.
Keeping Up
Keeping up 2013 Acrylic on canvas 50x50cm
Just like all other works in the series of hazy works, this work is about loneliness and isolation. An elderly man is following the trail of approximately seven young people. He persist in trying to keep up with them, but it is clear that he won’t hold it much longer anymore and that he will have to unhook with them.
The old man who is at risk of being left behind, will end up this way in a state of loneliness and isolation. A metaphor for the general aging in our society.
