This work, painted in an expressionistic style, depicts a masturbating man with a convulsive face. In our Western education, we are taught that these kind of images are “dirty”; they should be kept hidden. Sexuality is taboo and it should not be exposed in public. Boss clearly wants to denounce this taboo. And how! The viewer gets a gigantic purplish cock right-in-the-face! No-one can ignore it. The phallus is painted in a complemantary color of the yellow corpse, accentuating this effect. The countenance of the man’s face predicts an approximate orgasm. If one would only see the face, it could be an expression of pain. (Pain and joy are close to each other when “the little dead” is near.)

In onze Westerse opvoeding wordt ons aangeleerd dat dergelijke beelden “vuil” zijn. Rond seksualiteit heerst een taboe en het mag niet openlijk getoond worden. Boss wil dit taboe duidelijk aan de kaak stellen. En hoe! De toeschouwer krijgt een gigantische paarsachtige penis right-in-the-face. Er is geen ontkomen aan. De fallus is bovendien in een complementaire kleur van het gele lichaam neergezet, wat het effect nog vergroot. De gelaatstrekken van de man verraden een naderend orgasme. Als je alleen het gezicht zou zien, kon het evengoed een uitdrukking van pijn zijn. (Pijn en genot liggen soms dicht bij mekaar als “de kleine dood” nabij is.)
